Vyartha
व्यर्थ // વ્યર્થ // vyarth (in vain)
We called it Vyartha because this is the feeling that made us compose the book. It is an existential story of one Utc Singhal who did not fear the emotions and looked through the reality to find deeper meanings. He is a man of questions, and a courage to find answers. He does not shy away from the medium or the message. This is a story of Malay who was always curious about what goes in the mind of Utc. This is the compilation of emotions and discussions of these two boys who were in the graduating year of their engineering course.
Colophon of the book
The book was made using image collection of Utc Singhal and myself. Well, mostly of Utc. He has a better sense of aesthetics than me, also I think he feels and thinks more than I do. The images are reposts from our tumblr accounts. The angst and dissatisfaction we had towards what we were learning, what kind of world we were in, our emotional incompetencies and ourselves; the reposts on the web represented the feeble connection we experienced with fellow sense8s whom we have never met or we do not know if we have met.
The book is made with an existential love towards philosophy, a tendency of finding right connections, music of infected mushroom and limited desktop publishing skills. Locating myself From the chapter संक्रमित // સંક્રમિત // sankramit (Infected) The book is made using Photoshop, each page is crafted with patience on a 2GB Dell machine running windows with a lot of support from a 500GB seagate HDD. We remember the times when we had to delete our beloved movies and songs on the machine to increase the scratch disk space for photoshop to process these images and still have room for remembering history of our actions.
The book is divided into four parts; each representing the topics we discussed, the confusions we experienced, the emotions we felt during our four year stay at the engineering school.
This is to those times when we felt no need for validation, when we were okay with being astray. The explorations were random, but not un-directional… Just like us, the book might seem random, but is not un-directional. We do not consider this as art, but we consider this as reflective design of a memoir.
Discrepancy in energy distribution From the chapter अस्तित्ववाद // અસ્તિત્વવાદ // astitvavaad (Existentialism)
I would say, to know me and Utc, this book is the best description of where and when we come from. Thanks to Utc for the all the discussions we had and are going to have!
